Wine tourism in Mallorca

Mallorca isn’t only sea and calas: when you get closer to its vineyards, the island slows down and a different rhythm starts. Wine tourism here lives between marès stone walls, farm tracks and wineries that smell of ripe grapes. My goal is that you leave the airport and, within minutes, you’re heading for your first glass with no logistics doubts, no fine print, and a clear plan to link villages, wineries and sunsets.

In our experience, arrival sets the tone. You message when you land, walk to the Parking G meeting point and the courtesy minibus drops you next to the car. In five minutes you’re already on the road, no queues and no endless paperwork. Travelling with full cover with no excess, no holds or deposits, unlimited mileage and free additional drivers gives you room to improvise: maybe a visit runs long, maybe they suggest a pairing you hadn’t planned; it’s fine, the day adapts. The full-to-full policy keeps costs under control and free cancellation 24 h covers you if the forecast changes or something unexpected pops up.

Where to start: Binissalem and Pla i Llevant without missing the essentials

If it’s your first time, Binissalem DO is a great gateway: vineyards hugging villages like Binissalem, Santa Maria or Sencelles, and a very Mallorcan identity in the glass. It’s easy to combine a guided winery tour with a village stroll and a slow lunch. Drive without rushing: distances are short and the farm roads invite you to look out the window. Pla i Llevant DO stretches east (Petra, Porreres, Felanitx) with a more open landscape of fincas and plains made for long sunsets. If you split the trip into two halves — an inland day and an east day — you’ll feel you’re not “touring”, you’re living Mallorca.

The advantage of having a car is fine-tuning the day: a mid-morning tasting, a km-zero lunch in a nearby village, a quiet old-town walk and, if you feel like it, a late-afternoon cala. A free additional driver is perfect for taking turns on the way back. We usually recommend starting with the furthest winery and returning by moving closer to your accommodation — so the day ends near “home”.

Which experience to choose: classic tour, food pairing or a vineyard picnic

Not all tastings are the same, and that’s part of the fun. The classic visit (vineyard, cellar, 3–4 wine tasting) always works, especially for first-timers. If you want something different, themed tastings open new paths: native varieties (mantonegro, callet, prensal), vertical tastings of one label, or pairings with local cured meats and cheeses. Many places offer a picnic among the vines when the weather behaves; arriving with your car and a blanket in the trunk makes it feel like your plan from minute one.

For families, some wineries organise experiences designed for kids: short vineyard walks, simple explanations and grape juice so they can “cheers” too. If you fancy something iconic — the little vineyard train, for example — check schedules in advance; planning it by car is easy: park, enjoy, then continue your route. And if you’re travelling as a couple, a sunset tasting is the kind of memory that sticks: golden light, quiet, and a glass that tastes like holidays.

Getting around between wineries: real times, parking and chaining plans

Mallorca is best driven calmly. Leave the airport via MA-19 and connect to MA-20 if you’re skirting Palma; for the interior, you’ll be in the Pla area (Sencelles, Petra) in about 35–45 minutes, and for the east plan around one hour to Pla i Llevant. If you dedicate a day to Binissalem, leave a 15-minute buffer between visits; parking is usually easy either at the winery or in village car parks. In the Tramuntana, views set the pace and MA-10 proves it on every curve: use engine braking, enjoy the viewpoints, and walk the historic centres — the car does best in a peripheral car park.

This is where express pickup matters: land, confirmation message, minibus, keys, road. No excess and no deposits means no card holds right when you need your card for tours and restaurants. If you want to end the day at the beach, keep your swimsuit handy; many cala car parks are 10–20 minutes from inland villages with wineries, and arriving as the sun drops is a small luxury.

Prices, schedules and booking: what to know before you call

Tasting prices sit in an accessible range that changes by winery and what’s included: from a basic tasting to full pairings or special experiences. I’d recommend booking with a bit of lead time — morning slots fill first, and at midday the island wants a table. In high season, book your “must-do” winery early and keep the second slot for a shorter
