What exactly is the excess on a car rental?
The excess is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged. It works as a liability limit. If the excess is €1,200, that is the money you can lose in the event of a bump, a scratch or theft.
To secure that amount, most companies block the excess on your credit card when you pick up the car. That money stays held for the whole rental. They don’t charge you, but you can’t use it.
The result: between €800 and €2,500 frozen on your card during your holiday, pressure to buy extra insurance at the counter, and the doubt about what will happen when you return the car. That is the hidden cost of traditional rentals.
