Tourism guide in Mallorca: the best beaches and coves

The island of Mallorca is one of the most visited tourist destinations throughout the year, especially during the summer season. It is an island with incredible corners and a cultural, artistic and historical heritage of the highest level. For example, in the city of Palma you can find historic buildings of medieval origin, such as the Cathedral-Basilica of Santa María, the Lonja de Palma de Mallorca or the Royal Palace of La Almudaina. In other cities, such as Alcudia, Pollensa or Manacor, you can also visit monuments and historic buildings of medieval and later times.

However, this island also has a lot to offer in terms of natural heritage. For example, you cannot miss the route through the villages in the Tramuntana mountain range, in the north of the island, but also the natural caves, such as les coves dels Hams or les del Drach. Likewise, we must not forget that Mallorca is also known for its paradisiacal beaches and coves that attract so many tourists in summer, but which can be visited in winter to enjoy the visit in a calmer way.

However, to visit some of the most important beaches we recommend renting a good car near the airport, so you don’t have to waste your time. This is because, on this island, public transport is insufficient to reach some of the island’s most interesting beaches and coves. In addition, public transport has a limited frequency and does not run at night. With these facts in hand, we are going to show you some of the best coves in Mallorca.

Es Trenc beach

With its turquoise waters and white sand, it is one of the most famous and unspoilt natural beaches on the island, as it is located in a protected area of more than 1,500 hectares, the natural area of the Es Salobrar marshland. For this reason, the government of the Balearic Islands has opted not to develop the area, as it is the only large beach that remains intact on the island today.

Furthermore, on the horizon, you can see the Cabrera archipelago, making it one of the best beaches in Mallorca, thanks to its paradisiacal aspect of crystal-clear waters and white sand. Undoubtedly, a place where you can spend a great day if you are on holiday on this island.

To reach this dream spot, you must leave Palma on the Ma-19 road, heading southeast until you reach the village of Campos. From there, head south taking the Ma-6040 road until you reach the protected area of Salines des Trenc. Next to the beach you will find the Es Trenc Ses Salines car park and, just a few metres away, you can enjoy this marvellous natural spot.

Varques Cove

Cala Varques is undoubtedly one of the best coves in Mallorca. It is located between two small cliffs and it is a quite hidden corner with blue and crystalline waters completely surrounded by nature. It is ideal for those who love tranquillity, as, being so secluded, it is not usually crowded. In addition, here you can enjoy one of the largest cave networks in Europe and one of the most popular natural stone bridges on the island.

Access is difficult and it is absolutely essential to come by car. The entire journey can take approximately two hours. From Palma de Mallorca, take the Ma-15 road to Manacor. From there, head southeast along the Ma-4015 road until you reach the end of it, at the junction with the Ma-4014. You will have to park on the road, about 50 minutes’ walk away.

From there you will have to follow a road through fields until you reach a natural area. You will have to jump over a small fence to gain access and walk over uneven terrain and through a grove of trees. Finally, you will arrive and be able to enjoy a day at the beach in one of the best coves in Mallorca. We know that the access is complex, but we assure you that it is worth it.

Agulla Cove

On the east coast of Mallorca, further north, you will find Agulla cove, a small beach of golden sand and transparent waters, surrounded by a natural environment of pine forests. It is located near the municipality of Artá, to the north of Capdepera. It is a privileged spot, although it is very touristy, since next to it there is an urbanised area full of hotels, known under the name of “Cala Ratjada tourist complex”, at the easternmost point of the island.

Therefore, if you visit in summer, you will probably find it overcrowded, although you will still enjoy it, as access is quite easy, which is an advantage. However, if you are looking for movement, partying and a good time at night, this is the place to be if you want to go sightseeing in Mallorca.

To get there, as we have already mentioned, it is quite easy, although the journey will take you about an hour and fifteen minutes. You can leave Palma via the Ma-15 road in the direction of Manacor, but bordering this city to the north and the municipality of San Lorenzo de Cardessar to the south. When you reach a roundabout, take the exit to the Ma-4030 road.

At Son Servera, at another roundabout, you must exit onto the Ma-4040 until you reach Capdepera. Here, you will come out again onto the Ma-15 and turn off onto the Carretera Águila and, a little further on, onto the Camí de Cala Agulla. A few metres away, you will find a car park where you can leave your hire car and start to enjoy a wonderful summer day in one of the best coves in Mallorca, as it is just a few metres away on foot.

Cala Mondragó

In the extreme south of the island, in the Mondragó Natural Park, you will find another of the best coves in Mallorca, which is perfect both for families and for those who consider themselves nature lovers. It is located very close to the beach of S’Amarador and offers more than 70 metres of white sand, rocks and shallow crystalline waters of a beautiful turquoise blue colour. It is an ideal place for hiking or snorkelling on this island.

The access from Palma de Mallorca for tourism is quite simple, as you only have to leave the capital by the MA-19 road, bordering the municipality of Lluc-Major, Campos and Santanyí. The road leads you directly to the coast, in the extreme south of the island. You must turn off along the Camí de Sa Torre and then continue along the Carretera de la Alquería Blanca – Cala de Mondragó road. A few metres from the beach you will find a car park where you can park your hire car before making the most of a day out in one of the best coves and beaches in Mallorca.

Formentor Beach

We now go to the northernmost point of the island. Located on the Formentor peninsula, this cove, which bears the same name, offers spectacular views and crystal-clear waters. Nearby, you will also find the Cape of Formentor, from where you can enjoy some of the most impressive panoramic views of the island, and you can visit the lighthouse, where you will find a cafeteria located in a privileged spot.

It is located a few kilometres from the town of Pollença and is considered to be one of the best beaches in Mallorca. It is surrounded by mountains and a pine forest that provides plenty of shade, which is appreciated on hot summer days. In summer it tends to be a rather crowded beach, but it is still enjoyable. In winter, on the other hand, it is a quiet spot to visit in peace and quiet.

To get there, all you have to do is head towards the northeast of the island, taking the Ma-13 road to Sa Pobla. There you will find a roundabout, and you must take the exit on the Ma-2200 road towards the north, skirt the town of Pollensa and head towards Puerto de Pollensa. Finally, you will come to a roundabout that will take you onto the Ma-2210. If you follow the road, you will reach the area of Formentor beach, which is slightly developed. There is a small car park where you can park, just a few metres from the beach. There, you will be able to live an incredible experience and enjoy the landscape offered by the sea that opens up in the Bay of Pollença, in one of the best coves and beaches in Mallorca.
